* FENS-JNS-SfN JOINT STATEMENT ON THE USE OF ANIMALS IN RESEARCH *
The Federation of the European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), the Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS), and the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) have signed an important document that addresses the use of animals in scientific research. This remains a sensitive and controversial subject that needs to be treated in a proactive manner and in a politically informed way. While reaffirming the fundamental role of the use of animals for the advancement of basic and translational research in neuroscience, FENS, JNS and SfN believe it to be of the upmost importance that neuroscientists across the world, individually and collectively, address politicians, the media, the general public and patient organizations to explain how and why we use animals for research. This is necessary to educate and inform the public about responsible animal research and to be vigilant about current and future developments, such as the transposition into national law of the EU Directive 63-10 for the protection of animal used in scientific research, the growing concern in the US and in Europe about attempts by animal welfare groups to confer legal rights to animals, and the attempts to put restrictions on animal research at the next revision of the national law on animal welfare in Japan. The document is hoped to establish common ground for neuroscientists across the world to act together in a positive way to promote an appropriate balance between high quality science and improved animal welfare.
* EBC – EUROPEAN BRAIN COUNCIL *
The
Consensus document on European Brain Research,
prepared by *European Brain Council* *- EBC* in collaboration with more
than
200 European scientists and patients organizations, contains both
proposals for
future research programmes and describes the needs and achievements of
research
in Europe.
